Description

Symptoms

The primary symptom of the infection is bark necrosis, which manifests as discolored, sunken areas on branches and stems. As the tissue dies, it typically turns grayish or brownish.

Close inspection of the necrotic bark reveals small, dark, raised pimple-like structures, which are the pycnidia of the fungus. These are often clustered together, breaking through the outer surface of the bark.

Bark cracking and peeling are common in advanced stages of the disease. In some instances, the tree may exhibit resinous exudates (gummosis) around the infection sites as a defense mechanism.

Foliage on the affected branches often shows symptoms of wilting, premature yellowing, and eventual leaf drop. The progressive decline of branches is a hallmark of the infection's spread.

The structural damage caused by the fungus leads to the weakening of the wood, which may eventually result in limb breakage and the overall decline of the tree's vigor.
