Description

Symptoms

The primary symptom of the disease is the appearance of small, circular to angular spots on the leaves, typically measuring 2–5 mm in diameter. These spots begin as light brown and darken over time.

A distinctive feature is a darker, well-defined border surrounding the necrotic center of the lesion. In conditions of high humidity, a greyish or olive-colored fungal growth can be observed on the surface of the spots.

As the infection progresses, these spots tend to coalesce, covering larger areas of the leaf blade. This leads to premature chlorosis, where leaves turn yellow, followed by necrosis and leaf drop.

Severe infections may spread to petioles and stems, resulting in a stunted appearance of the plant. In dense canopy conditions, the affected plants show a noticeable decline in vigor and growth.

The mass abscission of foliage caused by the disease severely reduces the biomass production and quality of the crop, especially in large-scale commercial cultivation.
