Description

Symptoms

Early symptoms of Cercospora leaf spot appear in mid-summer, characterized by small, scattered spots on the upper leaf surfaces.

These spots often exhibit an angular or circular shape with a light grey or brownish center and a distinct, darker, reddish-brown margin surrounding the lesion.

Under high humidity, a fine, olive-grey fungal growth becomes visible on the underside of the leaves, corresponding to the area of the upper spots.

As the infection progresses, individual spots merge, covering larger sections of the leaf and leading to severe chlorosis and browning of the tissue.

In the final stages of the disease, the leaves curl, become brittle, and drop from the tree prematurely, resulting in visible canopy thinning.

Pathogen

The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Cercospora kakiivora, which belongs to the group of hyphomycetes and specifically targets persimmon foliage.

The fungus produces mycelium that invades leaf tissues, eventually developing conidiophores and conidia which serve as the primary source of spread during the growing season.

It survives the winter months primarily as mycelium and conidia embedded within fallen leaf litter, waiting for spring temperatures to trigger reactivation.

As spring conditions become favorable, the wind and splashing rain carry these fungal spores to fresh, emerging leaves, starting the infection cycle anew.

This pathogen is highly persistent, capable of remaining viable in the soil or on plant debris for extended periods, necessitating strict orchard sanitation.

Conditions for development

The disease thrives in warm and humid environments, which are conducive to both fungal spore germination and rapid mycelial colonization of the leaves.

Temperatures ranging from 20 to 28 degrees Celsius provide the optimal thermal window for the pathogen to cause significant damage to the host.

Orchards with dense foliage or lack of pruning suffer most, as these conditions trap moisture and prevent the canopy from drying out after rainfall.

Periods of frequent rainfall or heavy morning dew are critical factors that facilitate the dispersal of spores from the ground to the lower branches.

Trees that are already under stress due to poor nutrition or drought conditions are significantly more susceptible to being overwhelmed by the pathogen.

Why it matters
