Symptoms

Symptoms initially appear as small, circular, or irregular brown to grayish spots on the leaves. These lesions are often surrounded by a dark brown or purple border.

Under high humidity, a velvety or soot-like grayish growth becomes visible in the center of the spots, which represents the fungal spores (conidia) developing.

As the disease progresses, these spots expand and may coalesce, causing significant leaf tissue death and eventual yellowing or chlorosis of the foliage.

Lower leaves are usually affected first because they remain moist longer and are closer to the soil, which serves as a reservoir for the pathogen.

In severe cases, the stems may also exhibit elongated, dark lesions, which can weaken the plant structure and cause it to lodge or die prematurely.
