Symptoms

Early symptoms appear as small spots on leaves, which gradually increase in size. The affected areas often exhibit a noticeable change in pigmentation.

On the underside of the leaf, one can detect a characteristic coating consisting of spore clusters. This is a primary diagnostic sign during a visual inspection.

As necrosis progresses, it spreads to petioles and stems, leading to premature yellowing and leaf fall. The plant loses its vigor and overall aesthetic appearance.

Severe infections result in the deformation of young shoots and significant growth retardation. Cracks may form in the necrotic tissue, providing entry for secondary pathogens.

Pathogen

The causative agent of the disease is a fungus from the Ceratiaceae family. This pathogen primarily targets the aerial parts of plants, interfering with their vital physiological functions.

The fungus leads a parasitic life, forming specific spore-bearing structures on the surface of infected tissues. It can persist for long periods in plant debris or soil.

The life cycle of the pathogen is closely tied to periods of high humidity. Spore dispersal is facilitated by wind and rainwater droplets landing on leaves.

The mycelium penetrates the epidermis of the plant, causing necrosis and structural damage to cells. The parasite secretes enzymes that are toxic to the host tissues.

This is classified as an infectious fungal disease. Without timely intervention, the pathogen can quickly spread across healthy plants in the vicinity.

Conditions for development

Disease development is promoted by high air humidity exceeding 80%. Prolonged rains and foggy conditions create the perfect microclimate for spore germination.

Dense plantings with poor air circulation create an ideal environment for the pathogen. Heavy foliage retains moisture long after rain, extending the infection window.

Insufficient solar radiation also contributes to the spread of the disease. Plants experiencing nutrient deficiencies are usually the first to be targeted by the fungus.

The optimal temperature range for the development of the pathogen is 18–24 degrees Celsius. Rapid temperature fluctuations can weaken plant immunity.

The presence of water film on the leaf surface is a prerequisite for successful infection. Dry weather conditions significantly suppress the activity of the pathogen.

Why it matters

The primary damage lies in the reduction of the photosynthetically active leaf area. This leads to a disruption of metabolic processes and decreased crop yields.

Affected tissues lose their market quality. In nurseries, the disease can lead to the mass loss of seedlings due to the exhaustion of energy reserves.

Harm is also observed in the weakened immune system of the crop. This makes plants susceptible to unfavorable winter conditions or sudden frost damage.

Chronic infestation significantly shortens the productive lifespan of perennial crops. Stem necrosis can weaken the structure of the plant, causing it to break.

Economic losses arise from the cost of fungicides and the lost profit from lower quality or quantity of the harvested produce.

Protection

Sanitary pruning and the removal of infected debris are essential control measures. Burning or removing plant residue prevents the fungus from overwintering.

Strict adherence to planting distances avoids excessive humidity within the canopy. Regular thinning improves air circulation and light penetration.

Preventive treatment with contact or systemic fungicides is effective in the early stages. It is important to rotate active ingredients to prevent pathogen resistance.

Balanced application of potassium and phosphorus fertilizers enhances the structural strength of plant cells, increasing resistance to fungal attacks.

Constant monitoring of the fields during the growing season allows for the detection of the disease before it becomes a widespread outbreak.
