Externally, Candelariella medians appears as a crustose lichen forming yellowish or bright yellow patches on the substrate. Its thallus consists of small squamules that transition into a granular structure in the central part.
In affected areas, the lichen forms characteristic bright patches, often surrounded by a lighter margin. The apothecia (fruiting bodies) of this species are immersed in the thallus or nearly sessile, displaying a bright yellow color that matches the overall body of the organism.
Upon inspecting tree bark or stones colonized by the lichen, one can observe that it is firmly attached to the surface. Unlike parasitic fungi, it does not penetrate deep into plant tissues but creates a visible layer that hinders bark respiration.
In dry weather, the lichen colonies become more brittle and may partially flake off upon mechanical impact. When hydrated, they acquire a more vibrant, lush hue and become more prominent against the dark background of the bark.
The appearance of this lichen on fruit tree trunks often indicates a decrease in tree growth intensity and stagnant vital processes in peripheral tissues. It serves as a visual marker for a long-term lack of proper bark care.

Conditions for development
The development of Candelariella medians is directly dependent on environmental humidity. This lichen actively grows in shaded areas of the orchard where poor air circulation prevents the trunks from drying out quickly.
The lichen prefers tree bark with a neutral or slightly alkaline pH. This is why it is often found on tree species with rough, slowly aging bark that accumulates organic debris.
Wind plays a significant role in the dispersal of lichen spores. Small fragments of the thallus are easily carried to neighboring trees if systematic cleaning of trunks and main branches is not practiced in the orchard.
The absence of systematic crown pruning also helps create ideal conditions for colonization. Thick foliage creates a microclimate with high humidity, which is a key factor for the prosperity of epiphytes.
Old, weakened trees with slowed sap flow are the most favorable environment for this lichen. Their bark surfaces remain moist longer and are less protected against spore introduction.
Why it matters
The primary harm caused by the lichen lies in creating a mechanical barrier to bark gas exchange. Due to the tight attachment of the thallus, the tree breathes less efficiently, which eventually suppresses physiological processes.
The presence of lichens creates comfortable conditions for various garden pests, such as scale insects, spider mites, and aphids, to overwinter. Under the layer of lichen scales, insects find protection from unfavorable factors.
The gradual expansion of colonies can lead to bark cracking at the attachment points, opening "gates" for secondary infections. Bacteria and pathogenic fungi penetrate more easily into microcracks caused by mechanical pressure.
Aesthetic degradation of the orchard is also a negative factor. Abundant growth of lichens on bark indicates a general weakening of the tree's immune system, which reduces its productivity.
In the long run, the presence of lichens promotes local bark dampness, especially in humid conditions, which weakens the tree's defenses against winter stress.
Protection
To control lichens, the first step is to perform mechanical cleaning of the trunks and thick branches. Specialized metal scrapers or brushes are used, and this work should be done carefully to avoid damaging the living layer of the bark.
After cleaning, it is recommended to disinfect the trunks with a solution of ferrous sulfate or other fungicides. This kills residual lichen spores and simultaneously suppresses the development of bark diseases.
Prevention includes an annual autumn whitewashing of trunks with garden lime mixed with copper sulfate. Whitewashing creates an alkaline environment unsuitable for spore germination.
A crucial agrotechnical method is regular sanitary crown pruning. Thinning ensures access to sunlight and good air circulation, which prevents epiphytes from establishing themselves on the trunks.
Maintaining tree health through proper watering and fertilization significantly reduces the risk of lichen infestation. A strong tree with active bark growth is less susceptible to colonization than an exhausted plant.
