In advanced stages, the infection affects the rootstock or the crown of the vine. When slicing the base of the trunk, one can observe necrotic lesions in the woody tissues, which is a classic indicator of the disease.

Affected vines often struggle to survive stress, such as drought or heat, because their damaged root systems cannot meet the plant's physiological needs, leading to wilting and death.
