Symptoms
Initial symptoms include the appearance of dark, discolored spots on the bark of twigs and small branches. As the disease progresses, these lesions expand and the surface of the bark begins to crack.
During humid weather, small black eruptions appear on the surface of the infected bark. These are the pycnidia of the fungus, which are clearly visible to the naked eye upon close inspection.
As the infection deepens, the wood beneath the bark may become discolored and brittle. Foliage on affected branches often shows symptoms of distress, such as chlorosis, wilting, and premature abscission.
If the fungus encircles the entire circumference of a branch, the portion beyond the infection site will eventually die due to the disruption of water and nutrient transport.
In advanced stages, the damage manifests as deep ulcers and significant peeling of the bark, which severely compromises the structural integrity of the affected plant parts.
Pathogen
The disease is caused by the fungus Camarosporomyces. This pathogen belongs to the coelomycetes group and typically colonizes the bark and woody tissues of ornamental and fruit-bearing plants.
The biological cycle involves the formation of pycnidia, which are small fruiting bodies that produce numerous spores. These spores are highly resistant to adverse environmental conditions, allowing the fungus to survive long periods of dormancy.
Spread primarily occurs during moist conditions, as spores are transported by wind, rain splashes, and gardening tools. The fungus typically initiates infection through wounds, frost cracks, or sites of previous injury.
Once inside the host tissue, the mycelium secretes enzymes that degrade the cellular structure, allowing the fungus to feed on both living and decaying plant cells.
The colonization process is often aggressive, leading to localized necrosis that gradually spreads to healthy tissues, effectively girdling stems and branches.
Conditions for development

Inadequate nutrition and soil mismanagement contribute to lower plant vigor, leaving the host unable to form a defensive barrier against the invading fungal mycelium.

Camarosporomycosis poses a severe threat to the health and longevity of plants by causing tissue necrosis and the gradual loss of branches. This significantly impacts the aesthetic value of ornamental plants.
For fruit trees, the disease directly reduces yield capacity by killing fruiting wood and affecting the tree's overall photosynthetic area, leading to decreased vigor.
If left unmanaged, the pathogen can kill entire specimens, particularly young or vulnerable trees, resulting in economic losses for nurseries and commercial growers.
The presence of the disease necessitates increased labor and material costs for continuous sanitation, chemical treatments, and the replacement of severely damaged plants.
Furthermore, infected trees act as permanent reservoirs for spores, posing a constant risk of infection to healthy surrounding vegetation throughout the entire growing season.
Protection
Effective control requires strict sanitary measures, primarily the prompt removal and destruction of all infected branches. It is crucial to prune back to healthy wood, ensuring no symptomatic tissue remains.
Disinfecting all pruning tools between cuts is essential to prevent the mechanical transmission of spores from infected areas to healthy parts of the plant or other trees.
Preventive chemical treatments using copper-based fungicides or systemic alternatives are recommended during the dormant and early growth stages to shield susceptible tissues.
