Description

Symptoms

The most visible symptom of the disease is the appearance of dark, almost black, cushion-like stromata on the bark of branches or main trunks. These structures are often raised and clearly visible.

In infected areas, the bark frequently cracks and flakes off in patches, exposing the underlying woody tissue. As the disease progresses, the bark becomes brittle and peels away easily.

Leaves on infected branches often show signs of premature yellowing, wilting, and abscission. Symptoms usually progress from the outer canopy inwards towards the main structural branches.

When the bark is removed, the wood underneath typically shows significant discoloration, appearing dark or stained, which is a clear indicator of the fungal decomposition of lignin and cellulose.

Pathogen

The causative agent of this disease is the ascomycete fungus Biscogniauxia rosacearum. It is a specialized pathogen that primarily targets woody tissues of plants belonging to the Rosaceae family.

The fungus acts as a weak parasite or saprotroph, often colonizing trees that are already stressed or weakened. It actively degrades wood components, leading to necrotic processes within the stems and branches.

Its life cycle involves the production of distinct black stromata — cushion-like structures containing perithecia, where fungal spores are formed and released to spread the infection further.

The mycelium colonizes the bark, cambium, and phloem, disrupting the translocation of nutrients and water. This internal damage often leads to the gradual decline of the affected plant.

The pathogen is biologically adapted to utilize necrotic bark areas to accumulate biomass before spreading to healthy tissues of the host tree or nearby susceptible species.

Conditions for development

The development of Biscogniauxia rosacearum is heavily influenced by environmental stress factors. Prolonged droughts, which lower the tree's vigor and hydraulic conductivity, make trees highly susceptible.

High relative humidity combined with mild temperatures provides an ideal microclimate for sporulation. During such weather, spores are easily dispersed by wind and rain splashes to new infection sites.

Physical injuries to the bark caused by hail, sunscald, or improper pruning practices create essential entry points for the pathogen to colonize the tree's internal vascular system.

Overcrowded orchards with poor air circulation create stagnant moisture levels on the bark surface, which is critical for the germination of fungal spores and subsequent tissue penetration.

The presence of abandoned, unhealthy trees in the vicinity serves as a permanent reservoir of inoculum, increasing the risk of infection for neighboring healthy trees.

Why it matters

The primary threat of this disease is the progressive dieback of branches and, in severe cases, the death of the entire tree. The fungus effectively destroys the plant's essential vascular tissues.

Reduced orchard productivity is a major economic concern. Infected trees show decreased fruit quality and quantity as the systemic damage interferes with the tree's overall nutrient transport.

Economic damage is compounded by the need for labor-intensive sanitation, including pruning or removing heavily infected trees, which can lead to significant gaps in orchard uniformity.

The pathogen can persist for long periods in the environment, making it a persistent threat that requires constant monitoring and repeated intervention to manage effectively.

In addition to direct losses, the necessity for frequent antifungal treatments and specialized pruning management increases the annual maintenance costs for orchard operators.

Protection

The most important control measure is strict sanitation: removing and destroying infected branches immediately. Pruning must be done into healthy wood, and tools should be disinfected between cuts.

Sealing large pruning wounds with specialized tree wound dressings or paste is crucial to prevent fungal spores from entering the exposed woody tissue and initiating new infections.

Applying preventative copper-based fungicides during the dormant season (early spring or late autumn) helps reduce the overall inoculum density and suppresses the development of fungal fruiting bodies.

Maintaining optimal tree vigor through consistent irrigation and balanced fertilization programs strengthens the tree's natural defense mechanisms against fungal pathogens.

Proper orchard management, including thinning the canopy for better aeration, is an effective way to minimize bark moisture, thereby making the environment less favorable for the pathogen's growth.
