Close inspection often reveals tiny, dot-like fruiting bodies (apothecia) embedded within the thallus, which distinguish it from simpler forms of vegetation.

These colonies are predominantly found on the north-facing side of the trunk or deep within the shaded portions of the canopy where humidity remains higher.

Unlike true bark necrosis, the presence of the lichen does not lead to immediate tissue death, but it significantly alters the bark's surface texture.
