These bacteria are facultative anaerobes that thrive by fermenting carbohydrates present in plant cells. This metabolic activity frequently leads to the acidification and softening of the affected plant parts.
Pediococcus species are widespread in the environment, often surviving on decaying plant material, soil, and agricultural equipment. They are capable of rapid colonization when conditions allow.
The infection mechanism involves the bacterial secretion of enzymes and acids that degrade the structural integrity of cell walls. This leads to the characteristic breakdown of plant tissues.
