Symptoms

As the infection progresses, longitudinal cracks develop on the bark of trunks and branches. During humid weather, these cracks may leak a bacterial exudate or slime.

In advanced stages of the disease, necrotic lesions or cankers girdle the stems, cutting off nutrient flow to the extremities, which leads to branch death.

The woody tissue inside a diseased tree may develop an unpleasant, fermented odor due to the decay caused by the bacterial activity and secondary microbial colonization.

Pathogen
