Symptoms

Infected inflorescences are significantly deformed and enlarged compared to healthy ones. Visually, this manifests as overgrown tissues packed with black spore dust, which eventually ruptures the plant epidermis.
The presence of the pathogen renders the infected spikes completely sterile. The plant is unable to produce viable seeds, as its metabolic resources are hijacked to sustain the parasitic fungal growth.
The disease is most visible during the heading and flowering phases. Before this, infected plants may appear perfectly healthy, even though their internal tissues are already colonized by the fungus.
When the blisters rupture, they release spores that form a characteristic dark layer on neighboring plants or the soil surface, facilitating the spread of the disease within the plant population.
