While not a conventional plant pathogen, its excessive growth is often categorized as a water quality issue that negatively affects plant vigor and the overall health of aquatic ecosystems used in commercial agriculture.
The organism is a colonial diatom, characterized by needle-like cells that accumulate rapidly under favorable conditions. It competes with crops for essential nutrients and creates physical films on roots and system components. This interaction limits gas exchange and nutrient uptake, often leading to physiological stress and reduced yields in sensitive hydroponic crops.
Symptoms of an infestation include water turbidity, a brownish or golden biofilm on submerged equipment, and stunted growth of plants. In hydroponic setups, the presence of these algae can lead to rapid fluctuations in dissolved oxygen levels, which often causes the root zone to suffocate or promotes the colonization of secondary pathogens like fungi or bacteria.
Development and spread are driven by high levels of available silica, nitrogen, and phosphorus in the water supply. The algae thrive in moderate temperatures and under consistent light exposure. Stagnant or slow-moving water in hydroponic circulation systems provides an ideal environment for rapid bloom formation, especially if the nutrient solution is not replaced or filtered properly.
