Biologically, this fungus acts as a saprotroph, specializing in the decomposition of plant residues that have passed through the digestive tracts of herbivorous animals.

The fungal mycelium develops directly within the excrement, where it actively breaks down cellulose and other complex polysaccharides.

Its life cycle is closely linked to animals: the fungal spores must be ingested by an herbivore to undergo activation within the animal's digestive system.

After passing through the gastrointestinal tract, the spores are released into the environment with the dung, where they germinate to start a new growth cycle.

Conditions for development

The primary conditions for the development and spread of Sporormiella include high moisture levels and a supply of fiber-rich herbivore dung.
