A mass of purple spores develops on the surface of the casing or the mushrooms themselves, creating a dusty layer that is easily dispersed by air currents or human contact.

The disease usually manifests in patches. These patches expand over time, leading to the destruction of the underlying mycelium and the total cessation of fruiting in those specific areas.

During the final stages of the infection, a characteristic unpleasant musty odor often permeates the growing room, signaling advanced decay and a high concentration of fungal spores.
