Description

Symptoms

Symptoms appear as small, circular or irregular spots on the foliage, often light brown to greyish in the center.

A distinct dark border usually surrounds these spots, helping to distinguish this leaf spot from other types of plant injuries.

Small black dots, which are the fungal pycnidia, become visible to the naked eye within the necrotic centers of the spots.

As the infection progresses, these spots often coalesce, leading to extensive tissue death and significant browning of the leaves.

Heavy infestation leads to chlorosis and subsequent premature defoliation, leaving the shrub branches bare before the end of the season.

Pathogen

The disease is caused by the fungus Septoria rhamni-catharticae, which is an ascomycete-related pathogen.

It thrives by infecting the leaf tissue of buckthorn, where it develops its reproductive structures known as pycnidia.

These pycnidia contain numerous conidia that are released during humid conditions, acting as the primary source of spreading the infection.

The pathogen completes its life cycle by over-wintering in fallen leaves, waiting for favorable spring temperatures to initiate new cycles.

Infection occurs when conidia are splashed onto leaves by rain or transported by wind to susceptible plant hosts.

Conditions for development

High humidity and consistent rainfall are the most critical environmental drivers for the development and spread of Septoria rhamni-catharticae.

The fungus thrives in moderate temperature ranges, typically between 18°C and 25°C, coupled with extended leaf wetness duration.

Wind-blown rain acts as the primary vector for spreading the spores from infected lower foliage to the healthy upper canopy.
