Symptoms
The disease first manifests as small yellowish spots on the needles, which later turn into distinct brown or dark reddish-brown necrotic areas.
The most diagnostic feature is the appearance of tiny black dots — pycnidia — arranged along the needles, often following the longitudinal axis of the leaf.
A major symptom is premature needle drop. Heavily infected trees may lose a significant percentage of their foliage as early as mid-summer, causing the crown to look thin and sparse.
Affected needles frequently twist or distort around the necrotic areas, a common symptom that helps differentiate this condition from other larch blights.
In cases of severe infestation, the tree's overall vitality decreases, leading to stunted shoot growth and an unthrifty appearance throughout the growing season.
Pathogen
The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Mycodiella laricis-leptolepidis. It is a highly specialized fungal pathogen that specifically targets the Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi).
