Plant tuberculosis is a specialized term used to describe certain bacterial infections in plants that result in the formation of tumor-like galls. While the term shares a name with human pathogens, in botanical terms, it refers to the physiological changes caused by specific bacteria infecting the host tissue through wounds or natural openings.

This condition primarily affects woody perennial species, such as olive trees, grapevines, and various orchard crops. The pathogen colonizes the cambium and cortical tissues, triggering uncontrolled cell division, which serves as a nutrient-rich site for the bacteria to thrive and multiply throughout the growing season.

The primary clinical sign of this disease is the appearance of distinct growths, often referred to as knots or galls. These structures are initially small, soft, and light in color, but they progressively enlarge and darken, becoming woody and fissured. These galls interfere with the xylem and phloem, leading to poor nutrient transport and overall plant decline.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in disease spread. High relative humidity, persistent spring rains, and mild temperatures are ideal for bacterial migration. Mechanical injuries—often caused by pruning, extreme weather, or insect feeding—provide the entry points necessary for the pathogen to establish a successful infection in the plant host.

Control strategies for plant tuberculosis focus on sanitation and preventative hygiene. Key management practices include:

  • pruning only in dry weather;
  • sterilizing all cutting tools with sanitizing solutions after every plant contact;
  • removing and destroying infected tissue immediately upon detection;
  • maintaining overall plant vigor to improve natural resistance to bacterial pathogens.
