Description

Symptoms

The primary symptom is the appearance of sunken, necrotic lesions on the bark of branches or main trunks. These cankers often appear brown or black and may vary in size depending on the severity of the infection.

Small, pinhead-sized eruptions, representing the fungal pycnidia, appear on the surface of the cankers. During wet weather, these structures may ooze spores in the form of thin, light-colored threads.

Bark cracking is a common follow-up sign as the underlying wood dies and dries out. This often leads to foliage yellowing, wilting, and premature leaf drop on the affected branches.

In stone fruit trees, gummosis (oozing of sap) is a frequent reaction to the infection at the site of the canker. The presence of these lesions can eventually girdle the branch, leading to sudden dieback.

Trees exhibiting this disease often show stunted growth and a general decline in vigor. If left untreated, the dieback can spread to larger branches, eventually compromising the entire structure of the tree.

Pathogen

Dothiorella canker is caused by fungi from the Dothioraceae family, primarily within the genus Dothiorella. These pathogens are opportunistic parasites that target the woody tissues of various trees and shrubs.

The fungus produces pycnidia, which are small fruiting bodies where spores are matured. It survives the winter in the bark of infected branches or in dead tissues remaining on the tree.

Spores are disseminated by splashing water, wind, and contaminated pruning tools. Once established, the mycelium invades the inner bark and cambium, causing tissue death and disrupting sap flow.

These fungi are highly adaptable and can remain active in diverse environmental conditions. They are particularly dangerous because they often go undetected until significant damage to the vascular system has already occurred.

The pathogen is known for exploiting stress factors in host plants. When a tree's natural defense mechanisms are weakened, Dothiorella can rapidly colonize its vascular system and bark tissues.

Conditions for development

Dothiorella canker development is strongly influenced by environmental stress, particularly extreme temperature fluctuations. Frost damage and sunscald provide easy entry points for the fungus to invade the bark.

High humidity and consistent rainfall throughout the growing season favor spore production and germination. Dense plantings with poor air circulation further exacerbate the spread of the pathogen.

Plants suffering from poor nutrition or inadequate irrigation are significantly more susceptible. Lack of proper maintenance reduces the tree's natural ability to wall off infections and heal wounds.

Physical injuries caused by pests, hail, or agricultural equipment create pathways for the fungus. Without immediate disinfection, these wounds become active infection centers for Dothioraceae.

Incompatibility between the cultivar and the local climate can also trigger disease. Trees struggling with environmental adaptation are prime targets for fungal pathogens due to constant physiological stress.

Why it matters

The disease causes significant damage by killing productive branches, which directly reduces the yield of fruit-bearing trees. This loss of canopy structure decreases the tree's overall economic lifespan.

By disrupting water and nutrient transport, the pathogen causes systemic decline. Infected trees become brittle and highly susceptible to secondary pathogens and further environmental damage.

The financial burden involves not only potential yield loss but also the cost of intensive management and specialized chemical treatments. Infected trees may require heavy pruning, further reducing plant vigor.

The infection creates a permanent disease reservoir on the site. If not controlled, it will inevitably spread to neighboring trees, making it difficult to maintain a healthy orchard.

In nursery settings, this disease can ruin entire batches of saplings, leading to total loss for the producer. Controlling it is essential for the sustainable management of any woody plant collection.

Protection

The cornerstone of management is regular sanitation through the removal and destruction of infected branches. All pruning cuts should be sealed or treated to prevent fungal re-entry.

Applying white latex paint to trunks and main branches helps prevent sunscald and bark cracking, limiting the entry points for the disease. This is a simple but vital preventive measure.

Systemic fungicides, particularly those containing copper, are effective when applied preventively. Timing these treatments to coincide with wet periods can significantly suppress spore germination.

Proper fertilization, focusing on phosphorus and potassium, encourages stronger bark development. Ensuring trees are well-fed and irrigated helps them mount a robust defense against fungal invasion.

Strict hygiene protocols, including the disinfection of pruning tools between each tree, are mandatory. This prevents the manual transfer of spores across the orchard, which is a major driver of infection.
