Description
Symptoms
The initial signs include the appearance of small, circular or irregular spots on the leaf surface, which are usually brown or dark brown in color.
These spots often exhibit a lighter center surrounded by a darker border. As the infection progresses, the lesions can merge, leading to the collapse of large areas of the leaf.
In high humidity, fungal sporulation becomes visible on the surface of the lesions as tiny pinkish or greyish pustules, which are mass gatherings of new spores.
As the disease advances, the affected leaves may turn yellow, lose their buoyancy, and eventually decay, significantly reducing the visual appeal of the water lily.
In more severe cases, the fungus may attack the flower buds and petioles, causing them to blacken and fail to bloom, thus hampering the plant's reproductive success.
Pathogen
The causative agent of water lily anthracnose is the fungus Colletotrichum nupharicola. This pathogen is a host-specific parasite that primarily targets species of the Nymphaeaceae family.
The fungus invades the leaf tissues, extracting nutrients and causing cell degradation, which manifests as necrotic lesions. It spreads through the release of spores known as conidia into the water column.
The fungus is highly adapted to the aquatic lifestyle, utilizing the water flow to disseminate its spores from infected leaves to healthy parts of the plant or nearby water lilies.
The mycelium of the pathogen persists in decaying plant debris on the pond floor, serving as a primary source of inoculum for the subsequent growing season.

Conditions for development

Stagnant pond water provides an ideal environment for spore germination and colonization, as there is no water movement to disperse the concentrated fungal inoculum.
An accumulation of organic debris at the bottom of the pond facilitates the survival of the fungus during unfavorable conditions, increasing the disease pressure.
