Description

Symptoms

Initial symptoms include the appearance of small, water-soaked, light brown spots on the leaves. Over time, these lesions enlarge, turning dark brown or black, often with a defined margin.

Central necrotic areas often develop tiny dark spots or pimples, which are the fruiting bodies (acervuli) of the fungus. During humid weather, a subtle spore mass may become visible on these spots.

Stem infection is characterized by elongated, sunken lesions. These can girdle the stems, interrupting the flow of water and nutrients, which eventually leads to the wilting of the upper parts of the plant.

Premature leaf drop is a hallmark of an advanced infection. As the plant loses its foliage, its ability to photosynthesize decreases, resulting in stunted growth and a significant loss of ornamental value.

Pathogen

The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Colletotrichum euphorbiae, a member of the Deuteromycota phylum. This pathogen is specialized in infecting various species of the Euphorbia genus by invading plant tissues through microscopic openings.

The fungus completes its life cycle by producing conidia, which are disseminated via water droplets during rain, irrigation, or through contact with contaminated tools. It can overwinter or survive in soil and on plant debris as mycelium or sclerotia.

Once inside the host, the pathogen produces enzymes that break down plant cell walls, leading to tissue necrosis. The infection progresses rapidly, especially in environments with limited air circulation.

Both greenhouse specimens and outdoor garden varieties are susceptible. Young plants are particularly vulnerable as their cuticle layer provides less resistance to fungal penetration.

The biological versatility of Colletotrichum euphorbiae allows it to maintain a persistent presence in the growing medium, making it a challenging pathogen to eradicate once established in a collection.

Conditions for development

High relative humidity (above 80%) is the primary catalyst for the development of anthracnose. Consistent moisture on leaf surfaces provides the ideal environment for fungal spores to germinate.

The optimal temperature range for the pathogen is between +22 and +28 degrees Celsius. Within this window, the fungus propagates quickly, colonizing healthy tissues within just a few days.

Inadequate ventilation in greenhouses or overcrowded plant spacing creates stagnant air pockets. These conditions prevent the leaves from drying out, allowing the fungus to thrive and spread.

Overhead irrigation is a significant risk factor. Water splashing off infected leaves acts as a vector, spreading spores to previously unaffected plants in the vicinity.

Plants that are stressed due to poor lighting, nutrient deficiencies, or suboptimal soil conditions are more susceptible. A healthy, vigorous plant is generally more capable of resisting the initial invasion of Colletotrichum euphorbiae.

Why it matters

Euphorbia anthracnose poses a major threat to the plant's aesthetic appeal, which is critical for ornamental nurseries and commercial landscaping. Infected plants are often unsellable.

The disease causes systemic physiological stress. As the conductive tissues are damaged, the plant struggles to maintain water uptake and metabolic processes, which can ultimately lead to total plant death.

The pathogen's ability to spread rapidly means that an entire greenhouse collection can be compromised in a very short time if preventative measures are not taken early.

Economic damage stems from both direct loss of inventory and the operational costs associated with aggressive chemical control measures and environmental disinfection.

In garden settings, the pathogen can persist in the soil for several seasons, creating a recurring problem that necessitates the removal of affected plants and the sterilization of the surrounding soil.

Protection

Effective management begins with irrigation practices. Avoid overhead watering and focus on drip or base-of-plant irrigation to keep foliage dry, which is essential to disrupting the fungus's life cycle.

Strict sanitation is mandatory. Remove and discard all infected plant parts immediately to reduce the spore load. Ensure that contaminated debris is disposed of away from the planting area.

Maintain proper spacing between plants to encourage airflow. In indoor environments, use fans to increase air movement and reduce humidity levels to levels unfavorable for fungal growth.

Apply fungicides, such as those containing copper or systemic chemical agents, at the first sign of symptoms. Repeat applications at 7–10 day intervals to ensure thorough protection until the symptoms cease.

Disinfect all tools with alcohol or a bleach solution after touching infected specimens. Always use sterilized potting media when transplanting to prevent introducing the pathogen to the roots.
