Description
Symptoms
Initial symptoms present as small, water-soaked brown spots on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, often becoming irregular in shape and bordered by a darker, sometimes yellowish, halo.
A diagnostic feature of this anthracnose is the appearance of tiny, dark-colored fruiting bodies (acervuli) within the centers of the necrotic spots. These appear as small black dots visible to the naked eye.
As the disease advances, lesions may merge, resulting in large blighted areas on the leaf blade. This leads to leaf curling, distortion, and eventual drop, severely impacting the plant's aesthetic value.
In high humidity, a salmon-pink or creamy-colored mass of spores may emerge from the infected tissues, which can be easily spread by water splashes or air currents to neighboring healthy foliage.

Conditions for development
High relative humidity (above 75%) and warm temperatures are the primary environmental drivers for the development of Colletotrichum cordylinicola. These conditions allow the spores to germinate quickly upon contact with the leaf surface.
Free water on the foliage, caused by overhead irrigation or excessive misting, is the most common factor facilitating infection. The spores require a film of moisture to initiate the penetration process.
Poor ventilation and overcrowded plant arrangements prevent foliage from drying out, creating a stagnant microclimate that is extremely favorable for fungal proliferation.
Plants stressed by poor light conditions, improper fertilization, or incorrect potting medium are significantly more susceptible to successful infection compared to healthy, robust plants.
Transmission is often accidental, occurring through the use of contaminated pruning tools, infected nursery stock, or splashing water during routine maintenance of an indoor plant collection.

Chronic infection drains the plant's resources, leading to stunted growth and a decline in overall vigor. In severe cases, the plant may suffer from massive leaf loss, which hampers its ability to photosynthesize effectively.
If the fungus spreads to the growing point or stem, it can cause lethal damage, potentially leading to the death of the entire plant if left untreated.
In commercial nursery settings, this pathogen can result in significant economic loss, as an entire batch of plants may need to be discarded to prevent a widespread outbreak.

Protection

General plant health, including proper nutrition and light, helps the plant maintain a stronger cuticle, which acts as a physical barrier against pathogen penetration.
