Description

Symptoms

The primary symptom is the appearance of distinct, depressed spots on the bark of twigs and branches. Over time, these spots develop into crater-like lesions, which gave the disease its specific common name.

Close inspection of the lesions reveals tiny, black dots scattered across the surface. These are the pycnidia, which are the visible signs of the fungus's active reproductive stage.

Affected bark loses its elasticity and eventually starts to crack and peel off. This leaves the underlying wood exposed to further environmental damage, secondary infections, and wood-boring insects.

Severe infections often lead to the wilting and dieback of the current year's shoots. Leaves on the infected branches tend to turn yellow prematurely, curl, and wither, significantly impacting the plant's aesthetic and vitality.

Under high-humidity conditions, a whitish or yellowish spore-bearing mass may emerge from the lesions. This mass indicates that the fungus is actively spreading and poses a high risk to adjacent parts of the plant.

Pathogen

The disease is caused by the microscopic fungus Coleophoma crateriformis. It is a specialized pathogen that primarily targets the bark of trees and shrubs, acting as a persistent parasite under favorable environmental conditions.

The biology of the fungus involves the formation of pycnidia, which are specific fruiting bodies embedded within the host tissue. Inside these structures, spores develop and are released to propagate the infection across the host plant.

The pathogen is highly resilient and can persist in dead bark, infected twigs, and fallen leaves for extended periods. It overwinters as mycelium within the host tissues, waiting for the right conditions to reactivate in the spring.

The life cycle of Coleophoma crateriformis is heavily dependent on moisture. Water films from rain or mist are essential for the germination of spores and the subsequent colonization of the host's outer layers.

The fungus frequently attacks weakened plants. Factors like poor soil health, improper irrigation, or lack of mineral nutrition can compromise the plant's defense mechanisms, making it an easy target for the fungus.

Conditions for development

Extended periods of high humidity and rainfall are the primary drivers of disease spread. Such conditions allow the spores to remain viable and provide the necessary environment for them to germinate.

Why it matters

The primary damage caused by Coleophomosis is the progressive death of branches and potential total plant loss. Disruption of the vascular tissue by lesions interferes with nutrient transport, starving parts of the plant.

Loss of branches leads to significant damage to the plant's architecture and productivity. In fruit crops, this results in yield reduction and poorer fruit quality due to metabolic strain on the host.

The disease tends to accumulate in the orchard over time. Without proper intervention, it can lead to massive outbreaks that put an entire collection of plants at risk of complete decline.

Managing the disease requires significant labor and investment in chemical treatments. Frequent pruning, cleaning, and fungicide applications increase the cost of production and maintenance.

If the infection reaches the main trunk or scaffold branches, the damage may be irreparable. Removing infected specimens is often the only way to protect the remaining, healthy parts of the landscape.

Protection

The most important control measure is the systematic removal and burning of all infected twigs and branches. This reduces the inoculum pressure significantly within the orchard or garden area.

Tool disinfection is critical. Always clean pruning tools with alcohol or appropriate disinfectants between cuts on different plants to avoid transferring spores from diseased to healthy wood.

Early spring spraying with copper-based fungicides is essential for limiting the initial infection levels. These treatments help sanitize the bark surface before the growth season fully begins.

Maintaining a strong immune system through proper fertilization with macro and micronutrients helps the plant resist the pathogen. A well-balanced tree is significantly more resilient against fungal entry.

For severe cases, the application of systemic fungicides is recommended. Regular monitoring allows for early detection, which makes the disease much easier to control with targeted treatments.
