Description

Symptoms

Internal examination of infected wood reveals characteristic discoloration of the vascular tissues, appearing as brown or black streaking in the cross-section.

Trees affected by the disease stop producing fruit, and existing fruits may prematurely shrivel, dry out, or fall off.

Eventually, the tree enters a state of permanent decline, leading to complete desiccation and death of the entire plant.

Pathogen

The disease is caused by the pathogenic fungus Ceratocystis ficicola, which specifically targets fig trees (Ficus carica).

This pathogen acts as a vascular wilt fungus that invades the xylem tissues, disrupting the plant's internal water transport system.
