Symptoms
Symptoms initially appear as small, water-soaked spots on the leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots expand, often becoming dark brown or black and angular, confined by the leaf veins.
A hallmark of this bacterial infection is the presence of a translucent or oily halo around the necrotic spots, especially visible under high humidity. This feature distinguishes it from many fungal leaf spots.
Infected plants may exhibit stunted growth and, in severe cases, the entire leaf blade can become distorted and necrotic. If the infection reaches the petiole, the plant may collapse completely.
Under warm and humid conditions, the lesions can coalesce, covering large parts of the leaf surface. This frequently leads to soft rot and the emission of a foul odor due to secondary bacterial colonization.
Visual identification in the field should focus on the progression of these oily lesions and the presence of bacterial exudate in the early morning when the dew has not yet evaporated.
Pathogen

Development is heavily dependent on moisture. The bacteria thrive in wet environments where surface water or high humidity is present on the leaves, allowing them to migrate and colonize the host tissues effectively.
Dissemination across fields occurs primarily through rain splashes, irrigation water, and the movement of contaminated machinery or equipment. Under favorable conditions, the infection cycle can repeat rapidly, leading to significant outbreaks.
Laboratory diagnosis, including PCR assays or culturing on selective agar media, is often required for definitive identification because the symptoms can sometimes resemble other biotic or abiotic leaf spot conditions.
Why it matters
The primary economic harm of bacterial leaf spot is the total loss of marketability. Since corn salad is sold as a fresh leafy vegetable, even a few bacterial lesions render the entire crop unsuitable for sale.
The disease spreads rapidly, particularly in high-density plantings or greenhouse environments. A minor localized infection can transform into an epidemic within days, threatening the entire production batch.
Post-harvest losses are equally significant. Contaminated leaves tend to decay quickly during transport and storage, often triggering soft rot in surrounding healthy leaves, thus ruining entire crates of produce.
Producers face additional costs associated with intensive crop monitoring, potential destruction of infested lots, and the implementation of strict sanitation protocols to prevent further contamination.
Furthermore, because the pathogen is associated with human health concerns regarding food safety, any incidence of bacterial spots forces a strict withdrawal of product from the supply chain, causing substantial revenue loss.
Protection
The most important control strategy is the use of high-quality, pathogen-free seeds. Ensuring that the initial planting material is certified and tested is the first line of defense against the introduction of the disease.
Strict crop rotation is highly recommended. Farmers should avoid planting corn salad in the same soil for at least three to four years to allow the population of Acidovorax valerianellae in the soil to naturally decline.
Managing the greenhouse microclimate is critical. Reducing leaf wetness through the use of drip irrigation instead of overhead watering and maintaining proper ventilation helps to limit the movement and infection of the bacteria.
Sanitation is key to managing existing outbreaks. Workers must remove and destroy infected plant parts immediately upon detection to reduce the inoculum level within the crop canopy.
