Description

Growing requirements

Howeara is a complex intergeneric orchid hybrid resulting from the crossbreeding of the Rodriguezia, Leochilus, and Oncidium genera. This plant belongs to the Orchidaceae family and is highly prized by collectors for its striking and compact floral displays.

The culture thrives in stable temperature conditions ranging from +18°C to +25°C. It is essential to provide the plant with bright, indirect light, as direct sunlight can cause severe scorching of the delicate foliage.

For optimal growth, Howeara requires a specialized epiphytic substrate composed of medium-grade conifer bark, charcoal, and a small amount of sphagnum moss. This medium must ensure superior root aeration and facilitate the rapid drainage of excess water.

Watering is best performed using the immersion method with soft, room-temperature water. It is crucial to allow the substrate to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot, which poses a significant risk to the health of its epiphytic root system.

To promote vigorous development and consistent blooming, the plant requires high relative humidity levels, ideally maintained between 60% and 70%. In domestic environments, using humidifiers or placing the pot on a tray with damp expanded clay is highly recommended.

Main diseases and pests

The primary pests affecting Howeara include scale insects and spider mites. Upon detecting any signs of infestation, it is necessary to isolate the plant immediately and apply appropriate insecticides or acaricides according to the severity of the outbreak.

Overwatering is the most common cause of fungal infections leading to root and rhizome decay. Management involves the application of systemic fungicides and performing sanitary pruning of necrotic tissues, followed by disinfecting the cut surfaces with crushed charcoal.
