The Oshima cherry (Prunus lannesiana) is a species of cherry belonging to the Rosaceae family, native to the Izu Islands and the Izu Peninsula in Japan. It is highly regarded for its large, fragrant, white to pale pink flowers and serves as the parent of many popular cherry blossom cultivars.
This species thrives in temperate climates with mild winters and moderate humidity. It requires a sunny location to reach its full potential, as adequate light is crucial for the development of its dense floral display in the spring and healthy foliage throughout the summer.
Regarding soil requirements, Prunus lannesiana prefers deep, fertile, and well-drained soil. It is sensitive to waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot; therefore, planting on a slight slope or providing artificial drainage in heavy clay soils is highly recommended.
