Sowing dates
Delphinium mauretanicum is propagated mainly by seeds or by rhizome division. Seeds are sown in open ground either before winter or in early spring as soon as the soil warms up to 10 degrees.
To ensure early flowering, a seedling method is recommended. Seeds are sown in containers in February or March, providing stratification to improve germination rates.
Seedlings appear within 2-3 weeks, after which they need additional lighting with grow lights. Pricking out into individual pots is performed when the first two true leaves are formed.
Planting hardened seedlings in a permanent location is carried out at the end of May, when the threat of night frosts has passed.
The planting pattern should consider the size of the mature plant, so a distance of at least 40-50 centimeters should be left between bushes to ensure proper ventilation.
Growing requirements
The culture belongs to the Ranunculaceae family and prefers open, well-lit areas. Light shading during midday hours is acceptable to maintain the brightness of the colors.
The soil for cultivation must be fertile, moderately moist, and have a neutral or slightly acidic pH. It is crucial to prevent water stagnation at the roots, as this leads to plant decay.
The plant requires regular watering during dry periods, however, waterlogging the soil is unacceptable. Water should be applied at the base to avoid wetting the leaves.
For intensive growth and the development of flower spikes, fertilization with mineral complexes containing potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen is necessary during the active vegetation phase.
The strong stems of Delphinium mauretanicum require mandatory support, as they can break under strong gusts of wind during the flowering season.
Main diseases and pests
The most dangerous disease for delphiniums is powdery mildew, which manifests as a white coating on the leaf blades. To prevent this, avoid overly dense plantings.
Under high humidity conditions, plants can be affected by black spot, which leads to the death of the above-ground part of the plant if care is improper.
Among pests, the delphinium fly and slugs cause the most damage. Slugs are especially dangerous in the spring period when they consume young shoots and buds.
To control insects, systemic insecticides of a broad spectrum of action are used, which should be applied to the plants in the evening.
Regular weeding and mulching of the root zone significantly reduce the risk of spreading infections and the appearance of unwanted insects.
