Hermon broomrape (Orobanche hermonis) is an obligate root parasitic plant belonging to the Orobanchaceae family. Completely lacking chlorophyll, this plant cannot perform photosynthesis and relies entirely on host plants for water, minerals, and essential carbohydrates to complete its life cycle.
The native range of this species is primarily concentrated in the Middle East and Mediterranean regions. It thrives in arid and semi-arid climates, where its seeds can remain dormant in the soil for over a decade, waiting for the specific chemical stimulants released by the roots of a compatible host plant.
Botanically, the plant remains underground for most of its life, only emerging when it is ready to flower and release seeds. It attaches to the host's root system using a specialized organ known as a haustorium, which penetrates the host’s vascular tissue to draw nutrients directly from the xylem and phloem.
This parasite primarily targets species within the Apiaceae family. When an infestation occurs, the host plant shows signs of severe stress, including stunted growth, wilting, and significantly reduced yield. In fields with high seed bank density, the economic losses can be devastating for commercial vegetable production.
Management of Orobanche hermonis is complex due to its subterranean life stage. Current agricultural strategies include long-term crop rotation with non-host species, the application of specialized herbicides, and the development of genetically resistant cultivars to suppress the parasite's development effectively.
