Cossinia trifoliata is a distinct member of the Sapindaceae family. Originally native to the Mascarene Islands, this evergreen tree is recognized for its unique three-lobed foliage and ornamental appearance.

As a tropical species, it requires a stable, warm climate to thrive. It is best suited for greenhouse conditions in non-tropical regions, where temperatures can be strictly regulated to remain between 22 and 26 degrees Celsius.

Soil requirements involve a well-draining, nutrient-rich substrate. A mix of peat, bark, and perlite provides the necessary aeration and moisture retention capacity for optimal root development.

Light exposure should be bright but filtered. Protecting the plant from direct afternoon sunlight is crucial to prevent leaf scorching and to maintain the vibrant green color of its foliage throughout the year.

Watering frequency should align with the active growth phase. During the summer, the plant needs consistent moisture, whereas in the winter, the substrate should be allowed to partially dry out to prevent decay.

Main diseases and pests

Common pests include spider mites and scale insects, which often thrive in dry, stagnant air conditions. Regular monitoring of the underside of leaves is recommended for early detection.

Root rot is the most significant threat to the plant's survival. This condition is almost exclusively caused by overwatering or inadequate soil drainage, leading to oxygen deprivation in the root zone.

Fungal leaf spots can manifest when humidity levels are too high without proper ventilation. Ensuring good airflow around the tree canopy significantly reduces the risk of such occurrences.
