Swamp Shorea (Shorea uliginosa) is a large evergreen tree species belonging to the Dipterocarpaceae family. This species is highly specialized, thriving in the unique environment of tropical peat swamp forests.

The natural range of this tree is concentrated in the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, and Sumatra. It typically occupies low-lying, waterlogged areas where it can tolerate saturated soil conditions that would be lethal to most other tree species.

Botanically, the tree exhibits a robust, tall trunk and a dense, evergreen canopy. Its leaves are leathery and elliptical, adaptations designed to minimize water loss and endure the humid, sweltering climate of the tropics.

Environmental requirements include a year-round temperature range of 25–30°C and a very high level of ambient humidity. The tree requires specific hydrologic conditions, as it relies on groundwater retention characteristic of peat-forming environments.

Commercially, Swamp Shorea is prized for its high-quality timber, categorized as a type of red meranti. The wood is widely utilized in fine furniture production, interior joinery, and maritime construction due to its favorable physical properties.

Main diseases and pests

The primary threat to Swamp Shorea is the destruction of peat swamp ecosystems, largely driven by land conversion for agriculture and oil palm plantations. Drainage of these lands fundamentally alters the habitat, causing widespread tree mortality.

Disease pressure often increases when the hydrological balance is disturbed, leading to fungal infections in the root systems and stems. Insect pests, such as ambrosia beetles, often attack trees weakened by drought or changing water levels.

Wildfires pose a catastrophic risk, particularly during periods of artificial drainage of the peatlands. These fires destroy the standing biomass and ignite the organic peat layer, making reforestation almost impossible without significant ecological restoration.

Habitat fragmentation reduces the connectivity between populations, leading to reduced pollination success and limited genetic exchange. This decline in population density leaves the species vulnerable to long-term extinction risks.

Conservation strategies focus on maintaining natural water levels and establishing protected areas to stop illegal logging and land reclamation. Managing these forests requires a comprehensive approach to landscape-level water conservation.
