Corsican cotton lavender (Santolina corsica) is a perennial evergreen shrub belonging to the Asteraceae family. This species is native to the island of Corsica, thriving in rocky and sun-drenched Mediterranean habitats. It is highly valued for its dense, silvery-green foliage and tiny yellow flowers that appear in mid-summer.
This crop requires full sun exposure to maintain its compact, mound-forming habit. Insufficient light results in sparse growth and loss of the characteristic aromatic foliage color. It is an ideal plant for xeriscaping, as it thrives in poor, gravelly soils that drain exceptionally well.
Soil requirements are relatively modest; the plant prefers a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Drainage is the single most critical factor in successful cultivation. Heavy, water-retentive soils often lead to root decay and the premature death of the shrub, especially during dormant winter months.
Agrotechnical care focuses on structural pruning. Annual shearing after flowering helps maintain the plant's shape and prevents the centers from becoming woody and bare. Fertilizer application should be avoided, as extra nutrients promote leggy, soft growth that is susceptible to winter frost damage.

The primary health risk for Santolina corsica is fungal pathogen infestation caused by excessive humidity. Poor air circulation and waterlogged soil are the main drivers of root rot, which is difficult to cure once the root system is severely compromised.
Powdery mildew can occur during periods of prolonged damp weather. Management involves removing infected branches and ensuring the planting site allows for maximum sunlight penetration and airflow to dry out the leaves quickly after rain.
Aphids occasionally target the tender new growth during the spring season. While these pests rarely kill a healthy, mature plant, they can distort foliage and reduce the ornamental appeal of the shrub if left unchecked.
Root-knot nematodes can pose a problem in contaminated soils. Implementing crop rotation and using sanitized planting media are standard practices to prevent the introduction of these microscopic pests into the garden environment.
Frost damage is a threat in non-Mediterranean climates. While somewhat cold-tolerant, the plant requires protection from freezing winds and heavy, wet snow. Mulching with inorganic materials like gravel instead of organic matter helps keep the root crown dry during winter.
