Growing requirements
Velebit cow-wheat (Melampyrum velebiticum) is a herbaceous plant species belonging to the family Orobanchaceae. As an hemiparasitic organism, it possesses the unique ability to draw water and essential minerals from the roots of neighboring vegetation while maintaining its own photosynthetic capacity.
The native distribution area of this species is primarily restricted to the Velebit mountain range in the Balkans. It inhabits alpine and subalpine zones, typically found on rocky slopes and nutrient-poor calcareous meadows where environmental conditions are quite harsh.
Regarding its ecological requirements, the species thrives in well-drained, alkaline soils. It is highly adapted to significant diurnal temperature fluctuations and intense ultraviolet radiation at high elevations, displaying phenotypic plasticity in its vegetative growth.
The botanical structure consists of specialized tubular flowers arranged in spike-like racemes. These flowers are evolved to facilitate pollination by specific mountain insects, ensuring the reproductive success of the plant within its sparse habitat range.
This plant is not utilized in industrial or conventional agriculture. Instead, it serves as a subject of high botanical value and is protected within its natural habitats as a significant indicator species of the regional Balkan mountain ecosystem health.
