Hagenia abyssinica, commonly known as Kousso, is a distinct tree species belonging to the Rosaceae family. It is native to the Afro-montane regions of East Africa, thriving at altitudes typically ranging from 2,000 to 3,000 meters above sea level.
The tree requires a cool, moist climate with frequent rainfall and high relative humidity. It flourishes in deep, fertile, and well-drained volcanic soils, showing a preference for slightly acidic to neutral soil pH levels.
Botanically, it is a dioecious tree, meaning male and female flowers grow on separate individuals. The leaves are large, pinnately compound, and have a distinctive texture that helps the plant manage transpiration in its native foggy mountain habitats.
Agricultural success depends on providing adequate spacing for the trees, as they develop large, spreading canopies. They are often planted as part of agroforestry systems, contributing to soil erosion control on steep mountain slopes.
Apart from its ecological role, the plant is primarily cultivated for its female inflorescences. These parts are rich in phloroglucinol derivatives, notably koussin, which have been used for centuries in traditional medicine to treat tapeworm infections.

Competition from fast-growing weeds can stifle the growth of young saplings during the establishment phase. Consistent weeding around the base of the trunk is crucial for the first three years until the tree establishes a competitive canopy.
