Sowing dates

Sowing seeds of Delphinium macropetalum is recommended either before winter or in early spring in seed trays. The seeds have relatively low germination rates if stored for a long time, so it is advisable to use freshly collected material or perform stratification for one month at low temperatures.

For spring sowing, seeds should be buried in loose substrate no more than 0.5 cm deep, as they require light to germinate. The optimal temperature for uniform emergence is between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius.

Pricking out the seedlings into individual containers should be done when the first two true leaves have developed. This allows the root system to strengthen before transplanting into the open field.

Seedlings should be planted in the soil once the threat of night frost has passed, maintaining a distance of at least 40–50 centimeters between plants. This spacing is essential to ensure adequate air circulation and prevent fungal diseases.

A second sowing in open ground can be planned for late August, allowing plants enough time to root before the onset of persistent cold weather to bloom in the following season.

Growing requirements

Delphinium macropetalum prefers open, well-lit areas protected from strong winds that could damage the tall flower stalks. Light partial shade is acceptable during the hottest hours of the day.

The crop is demanding regarding soil fertility; plants thrive best in loams or well-cultivated chernozems with a neutral pH. Acidic soils require pre-liming to ensure proper nutrient uptake.

The most critical condition for successful growth is efficient drainage. The plant reacts extremely negatively to moisture stagnation in the root zone, which quickly leads to root collar rot and death of the plant.

During active growth periods, the delphinium requires regular watering, especially during dry spells. Water should be applied directly to the root zone, avoiding contact with the foliage to prevent burn marks and the development of powdery mildew.

Fertilizers should be applied at least three times per season: nitrogen-based in the spring for vegetative growth, complex mineral formulations during the budding phase, and phosphorus-potassium fertilizers in autumn to prepare for winter.

Main diseases and pests

The primary threat to this crop is powdery mildew, which manifests as a whitish coating on leaves under high humidity and temperature fluctuations.

Black spot is also common, causing tissue necrosis on the leaves. As a preventive measure, timely removal and disposal of plant debris in the autumn are highly recommended.

Among pests, the delphinium fly and slugs cause the most damage. They can attack both young shoots and flower buds, significantly reducing the decorative quality and productivity of the plantings.

Systemic insecticides are effective in controlling insect pests. The application of chemical agents must be strictly regulated and carried out before the active flowering phase begins.

To protect against root system rot, it is recommended to follow crop rotation practices and treat the soil with fungicides upon the first signs of disease on neighboring plants.
