When cultivated, sowing is typically performed in early spring as soon as the soil reaches a temperature of 10 degrees Celsius. Seed depth should be maintained at 1–2 centimeters to ensure optimal germination rates.

The planting pattern requires a spacing of at least 40 centimeters between rows to facilitate mechanical or manual weeding. Establishing a proper stand is critical for the long-term success of the crop in a field environment.

Seeds of this species require light exposure for maximum germination. Soil should be pressed gently after sowing to ensure proper contact between the seed and the soil particles without burying them too deeply.

Once established, the plant develops a robust taproot system, which helps it survive long intervals between rainfall events. This makes it a low-input crop suitable for regions with limited irrigation resources.

Growing requirements

Fertilizer use should be minimal. Excess nitrogen encourages excessive vegetative growth, which makes the plant more susceptible to wind damage and may delay the onset of the flowering stage.

Main diseases and pests

Powdery mildew represents the most significant fungal threat, especially during humid, overcast periods. Improving air circulation by pruning dense clusters is a primary cultural control method.

Insect pests such as aphids and leafhoppers may target new growth during the spring. Monitoring is essential to ensure that populations remain below economic injury levels without relying on harsh chemicals.

Root rot pathogens thrive in compacted, waterlogged soils. Avoiding heavy machinery passage over the field and ensuring adequate drainage are the best strategies for preventing these diseases.

Competition from fast-growing weeds during the establishment phase can drastically reduce the yield of Centaurea jordaniana. Early-season weed management is crucial for survival.
