Sodium Hydroxide: Properties and Applications in Various Industrial Sectors

Most modern industries cannot operate without sodium hydroxide. It is used in metallurgy, pharmaceuticals, water treatment, detergent production, and even in the food industry. This substance participates in cleaning, acid neutralization, metal extraction, and the creation of synthetic materials. All this is because sodium hydroxide (NaOH), also known as caustic soda, is one of the most widely used alkaline reagents. It actively reacts with acids, fats, and other compounds, making it indispensable in many technological processes.

Thanks to its wide range of applications, sodium hydroxide ensures uninterrupted operation of key industrial sectors, contributing to safe production and high-quality output.

Physical and Chemical Properties of Sodium Hydroxide

Sodium hydroxide — this is a white solid substance that can be in the form of granules, flakes, or powder. It is hygroscopic: actively absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from the air, so it is stored in sealed containers. Caustic soda dissolves well in water, forming a concentrated alkaline solution. During the reaction, a large amount of heat is released. The reagent also dissolves in alcohols. Melting point: 318°C. Boiling point: 1388°C.

Reaction with water and acids:

  • When in contact with water, a significant amount of heat is released, which can cause the solution to boil and splash, so mixing should be done with caution.
  • Reaction with acids results in the formation of salts and water. Example: NaOH+HCl→NaCl+H2O.
  • The substance reacts with fats, forming soap.

Production of Sodium Hydroxide

The main industrial method of obtaining sodium hydroxide is the electrolysis of a sodium chloride (salt) aqueous solution. In this process, electric current is used to break down the substance into three products: sodium hydroxide, chlorine, and hydrogen.

The electrolysis method is widely used due to the high purity of the final product. The produced sodium hydroxide can be released as a liquid solution or, after evaporation — as granules, flakes, or powder. Thus, you can buy sodium hydroxide in various concentrations, depending on the specific needs of a particular production.

Applications of Sodium Hydroxide in Various Industries

Sodium hydroxide is a universal reagent used in various industrial sectors, such as metallurgy, paper production, chemical industry, food industry, medicine, and pharmaceuticals. Let’s examine them in detail.

Food Industry

In the food industry, sodium hydroxide is most often used for sanitary treatment of equipment and regulation of product acidity. In the dairy industry and beverage production, 0.5–2 % solutions are used. It is used to clean pipes and tanks from fatty and protein residues.

Sodium hydroxide is also used in ice cream, gelatin, and marinades as additive E524. In finished products, its concentration does not exceed 1 % (the permitted norm is from 0.2 %).

Metallurgy and Mining Industry

In metallurgy, the substance is used to extract metals from ores, clean surfaces, and prepare materials for further processing. Here are several main methods of its use:

  • Aluminum extraction. To obtain pure aluminum, bauxite (a mineral containing alumina) is treated with hot 30–35 % NaOH solution. This method is called the «bauxite process» or «Bayer process».
  • Ore purification. Caustic soda helps remove unwanted impurities from ores of colored metals, improving the quality of raw material before smelting.
  • Metals surface treatment. NaOH is used to degrease and remove oxide film from metals prior to painting, electroplating, or welding.

Thanks to the properties of caustic soda, the above processes occur quickly and effectively.

Pulp and Paper Industry

Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) plays a key role in paper production. It is used for processing and breaking down wood, cleaning cellulose from lignin residues and other impurities, and ultimately improving the characteristics of the final product. Thanks to the use of sodium hydroxide in the pulp and paper industry, strong, smooth, and high-quality paper is obtained, which is used for printing, packaging, and other purposes.

Chemical Industry

In the chemical industry, the substance is most often used for producing detergents, polymers, and neutralizing acids. In addition, the reagent is used to neutralize acids in technological processes, ensuring pH control and stability of chemical reactions. Caustic soda is also added to pipe cleaning agents, as it effectively dissolves organic contaminants.

In the polymer industry, sodium hydroxide is used in the production of plastics and synthetic fibers. Since it positively affects polymerization processes and the final characteristics of materials.

Water Treatment

Sodium hydroxide is used to neutralize acids in industrial wastewater. It helps maintain the necessary pH level in water treatment systems and prevents corrosion of equipment. It is also used to precipitate heavy metals in water and remove contaminants before further filtration.

Medicine and Pharmaceuticals

In pharmaceutical production, sodium hydroxide is used for synthesizing drugs and regulating the acidity of solutions. In the medical field — for sterilizing equipment and neutralizing waste containing biological contaminants.
