Energy Independence Without Harm to the Smartphone

All power banks, like smartphones, have built-in safety systems that protect against short circuits, overcharging, etc. Together, this allows the user to safely use gadgets. But in some cases, an external battery can damage the phone. Let's consider these situations.

Suspicious Manufacturer

Sometimes you can find very cheap power banks made by an unknown brand. On the one hand — this is a chance to save your own money. On the other hand — there is a risk that the device was made from low-quality materials without following safety technologies. What does this threaten? Mostly smartphones for charging use a voltage of 5.1 – 5.4 V, and a quality 10000 mAh power bank can maintain voltage within the specified range.

If the device's manufacturing technology was violated, it may output a higher voltage, leading to damage to the smartphone's battery.

Suspicion of Malfunction

If, upon visual inspection, the power bank shows mechanical damage, «swelling» of the battery, or if during use you notice a smell of burning, do not use it. A damaged device may even explode and cause injuries or lead to fire.

Low-Quality Cables

When charging smartphones or other gadgets from a power bank, it is better to use official cables. Cheap cables may increase resistance, leading to significant loss of charging device resources.

Low-quality cables do not harm the phone itself, but they negatively affect the autonomy of the power bank.

Damaged Connectors

People who constantly use a power bank carry it in a bag or backpack. This is convenient, as there is always the possibility to recharge the phone or earphones. The main thing — remove the cable from the power bank after completing the charging cycle, since leaving it there poses a high risk of damaging both the cable and the connector.

Even if the bag is empty and there is a separate pocket designated for transporting the external battery, it is not worth ignoring this rule. Simply develop the habit of immediately unplugging the cable; it is not difficult, but it saves you from many problems.

Excessive Heat — Harmful

Specifically, it is not advisable to charge gadgets directly in a backpack or bag, as this creates a closed space. If the smartphone heats up, excess heat is transferred directly to the cable, leading to increased resistance, prolonged charging time, and battery failure.

For the same reason, it is not advisable to actively use the smartphone while charging from the power bank. The heat from the human body may increase the device's temperature, potentially causing overheating.

If you notice that the phone begins to heat up while charging from an external battery, try using a different cable. If the situation does not improve, it is better to buy a new power bank.
