How to grow a pineapple at home: features and recommendations

Many people dream of creating an exotic corner in their home and wonder how to grow a pineapple? This tropical plant is considered one of the most popular and beloved. It blooms beautifully and produces fruit actively. To grow this exotic fruit, you only need to obtain the top of a fresh fruit. In addition, you will need a pot with soil and some knowledge.

The pineapple's native country is sunny Brazil. To grow and bear fruit, it needs home conditions as close to natural as possible. However, it is important to know, how to plant a pineapple and how to properly choose it for these purposes?

Conditions for pineapple growth

Pineapple is a warm-loving plant, so it is important to maintain a temperature no lower than +15°C for its comfort. During summer, it can reach +30°C. However, the plant does not tolerate sudden temperature changes. In hot weather, it should be misted. In summer, the pot with the pineapple should be placed outdoors, on a balcony or terrace.

Maintaining the temperature regime is also important in late autumn and winter - this will allow the plant to easily survive the shortened daylight period. The temperature should be gradually lowered - this will prevent root rot. Experienced gardeners recommend not placing the pot on a windowsill - better to use a stand near the window. However, radiators and other heating elements should not be nearby. Pineapple does not tolerate drafts. However, the room should be ventilated.

Humidity is important for the plant - it grows in tropical regions. Therefore, it is advisable to purchase an air humidifier or regularly perform mechanical misting. For harmonious growth, this should be done once or twice a day, and in hot weather, double the amount. It is permissible to shower the plant with a garden hose. In cold months, misting should be avoided unless the air in the room is not overly dry.

Watering should be moderate. To determine the need for watering, examine the top layer - if it is too dry, watering is necessary. However, overwatering is undesirable. The best place to grow a pineapple is a bathroom with a window. This will help achieve optimal humidity.

The next indicator is lighting. Pineapple loves plenty of sunlight - choose a south or southwest-facing side. However, sometimes simply keeping the plant on a sunny windowsill is not enough. During the dark season, artificial lighting should be organized. For this purpose, LED or special grow lights are suitable.

Recommendations for selecting the fruit

For growing pineapple at home, three methods are recommended:

  • by cuttings;
  • by seeds;
  • by the crown.

The most common method is the last one - it requires minimal effort. It is important to know how to choose a pineapple for growing. It should be ripe, have a distinct and intense aroma. There should be no scratches, dents, or brown spots on the fruit. The skin should be a rich yellow color, and the crown should be green without yellowing tips. The best time to purchase a donor pineapple is summer or September.

Planting features

For planting pineapple, choose a pot with a diameter of 14-15 cm to accommodate its branched root system. Cactus soil will work well. You will also need:

  • perlite;
  • river sand;
  • vermiculite;
  • peat.

Water the substrate with boiling water a few days before planting - this is a kind of soil disinfection. Use a sharp knife to cut off the crown - it should not have any flesh. Then leave it to dry for a couple of days on the windowsill, and then place it in a container with water so it can root (water should not touch the leaves). The root system will start forming within a month, and when the roots grow to 3-3.5 cm in length, plant the crown. To do this, make a depression in the pot, place the sapling, and lightly cover it with soil. Cover the top with plastic wrap, which should be periodically opened. Remove the plastic wrap once the plant has fully rooted.
